 Iceland is the land of glaciers - a total of 13 glaciers cover and shape a little more than 11% of the total land area thus making the landscape sustainable. "Jökull" is the Icelandic word for glacier, which is why it is used in practically every glacier name occurs. Vatnajökull is not only by far the largest in Iceland, it is also the largest in Europe. It is located in the south and has about 30 foothills. Its ice is up to 900m thick. Lots of attractions all over Iceland only become visible through it, such as the glacial lagoons in the south or many large waterfalls that of be fed by its meltwater. In addition to Vatnajökull, the largest other glaciers are Langjökull, Hofsjökull, the Mydalsjökull and the Eyjafjallajökull, which paralyzed air traffic in half of Europe when it erupted in 2010. |
