 With an area of over 10,000 square kilometers, the Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt pan on earth. It is located in the southwest from Bolivia in the Altiplano landscape at an altitude of 3,650m. Here are about 25,000 tonnes of salt annually won (only for the Bolivian market, not exported) but there´s special interest in one of the largest lithium deposits worldwide. Lithium is a valuable raw material that is in great demand today, especially in the automotive industry (batteries). From the middle of the year to about the beginning of December the up to 30 meters thick salt crust usually is dry and can even be driven on by buses and trucks. During the rainy season, the salt lake can be covered with water and then act as if it were an oversized mirror. |
